This dead on, accurate quote from an editorial by conservative columnist David Brooks.
“I sometimes wonder if the Republican Party has become the receding roar of white America as it pines for a way of life that will never return.”
So true, so true.
Perhaps Conservative white America. I’m white. You’re white. The Republican Party doesn’t represent us. I don’t think we’re pining for a life that will never return, but for a life that is yet to come.
He’s not talking about us, Eric, but those scared old people who see gay couples and interracial couples, and salsa everywhere, and hear Spanish on the street, and there’s a black man in the White House and it feels alien and wrong to them. For me, I think it’s just exciting. It’s all these different threads that made America great and vibrant. I don’t know why they fear it so much.
No, I realise what he meant, I just don’t like being lumped into the negative stereotype of “white America.” I also didn’t mean to suggest that I was talking about an afterlife in my previous cooment, but rather the promise of a brighter future. I totally agree with you that it is America’s diversity that has makes us strong, and yet, as a nation, we seem to resist it tooth and nail.
