“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”― Edmund Burke
We are where we are — 76,740 dead from Covid-19 — because of the cowardice of putatively good men, brave men, intelligent men, patriotic men.
Where is Rex Tillerson who reputedly called Trump a “fucking moron”? You have anything to say?
Where is General Mattis who said Trump had the understanding of “a fifth- or sixth-grader,”, and ultimately resigned, but now refuses to speak out about what he has seen and heard? We’re listening… to the sound of silence.
Where is John Kelly, White House Chief of Staff who called Trump “an idiot”. You have anything you’d like to tell the class?
Where is Bolton who also resigned, but refused to testify during the impeachment trial? Those book sales more important than your country and the lives of its people? Guess they were.
Where is Mueller? In his case I add naïveté to my accusation of cowardice. He believed in our institutions without accepting or understanding that the institutions are only as good (or bad) as the men and women who staff them. And when Trump is staffing them you know it will be small, crabbed, evil men who are mirrors of Trump’s own proclivities.
Rod Rosenstein, what did they offer you that had you standing mumchance behind Bill Barr as he mischaracterized the Mueller Report? Do speak up, we can’t hear you.
In my fantasy world I imagine them preparing to go public in October with all the devastating information in a last ditch effort to stop Trump from winning a second term. But then I look back over the past three and a half years, and I allow that dream to vanish into mist and regret because there is nothing to indicate that they will find the courage to do what they must know would be right and honourable thing to do.
I grieve for the dead. I grieve for my country which is also dying. And I grieve for the planet which will not recover if we continue on this path.
You’ve succinctly summed up the challenge this country faces. I hadn’t considered Muller’s naivete, but you’re exactly right. An obviously intelligent man who I’m sure considers himself a patriot but can’t make the leap to take a stand beyond his governmental role.
Ms Snodgrass,
Your writings and excellent work in the entertainment industry is indeed outstanding, it must be noted that your understanding of the real world is woefully inadequate! On paper, socialism is an outstanding system! In practice it is subject to the failings of human nature! Historically, that system has always failed in the face of human nature! In the world of Star Trek and other sci-fi “universes”, people have “grown beyond the failings of the past”! Please remember that it is a work of FICTION!
President Trump is a vain and arrogant BUSINESSMAN, however he has revived this country’s economy and instilled a sense of pride in self and Country!
As your business sense seems to prove, stick to stuff you know how to do well! Get a business agent to manage the money stuff.
Oh, cupcake, I have a law degree. I also manage a natural gas and oil company. I’m a capitalist in favor of well regulated capitalism. And where on Earth did I ever mention socialism in my post? And yeah, 30 million out of work, and massive federal debt. This economy is great. (That’s irony btw).
Robert Andrew Pastor,
I note with irritation the reference to “socialism” in your post, and wonder where in Ms. Snodgrass’s blog entry is any sort of economic theory mentioned? The author was referring to an ethical and moral failure of certain governmental figures, in this case Republicans, who knew the criminality, the ineptitude and general charlatanry of the current occupant of the White House, but have done nothing to stop this fraud from destroying the very fabric of America.
I must admit I did find humor in your utterly misguided and inherently wrong take on Trump that somehow, somewhere in the cobwebbed recesses of your mind you believe “he has revived this country’s economy and instilled a sense of pride in self and Country.” Humorous, certainly, but only in an ironic sense.
I would suggest that the economy was just fine before he took office, that the unemployment rate dropped from a Recession-era high of 9.3% down to 4.3% by the time Trump took office (and was trending down for years), his imbecilic tariffs caused the highest farm bankruptcy rate in 10 years (even with Trump giving billions in “socialist” welfare to the farm industry), and that his Republican tax-cut-for-the-rich scheme did nothing but cause an artificial stock bubble when corporations spent whatever savings in an orgy of stock buy-backs ($1 trillion+) that evaporated as soon as a crisis hit, and to top it off Trump and his henchmen thus eliminated important tax revenue that is now desperately needed because of the trillions in stimulus dollars now ballooning the deficit. Trump has bankrupted the country, just as he bankrupted any number of businesses he has operated.
In regards to “pride in self and country”, Trump has divided the country, alienated all our longtime allies, and refers to white nationalists carrying tiki-torches chanting anti-Semitic slogans in Charlottesville, and AR-15 toting, Confederate flag-waving, swastika placard-holding protesters in Michigan and Illinois as “good people”. What “pride” is it you think he instilled, exactly? Trump has literally tried to destroy the EPA (created by Nixon – how’s that for irony?), and he played golf and attended pep rallies all through January, February and early March while ignoring more and more urgent intelligence reports warning of the coming pandemic; therefore, we now have more deaths in the U.S. due to Covid-19 than any other country on earth. And the blood is on Trump’s hands, particularly since he is trying to rush the country back to work in the sociopathic belligerence of man who only care for his numbers, his election, his self-worth.
I would suggest that you stick to the stuff you know, put on your tinfoil helmet, turn on FOX News and allow the remaining grey matter left in your collapsing cranium to leak out of your ears. I will not suffer fools, particularly cultists full-ready to drink the electric Kool-aid.
“…he has revived this country’s economy and instilled a sense of pride in self and Country! ”
Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, wait, were you serious?
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A law degree, interesting. I attended Illinois Institute of Technology trying for a degree in Nuclear Physics. I failed that miserably. I now have a BS in Accountancy and a Masters in Economics and a life long love of Science and associated fiction. Enough of who has a bigger head!
The world of Star Trek was based on nearly pure socialism as an underlying premise. I am happy that you are successful in life.
Temp stop to read new post.
Good god, sir, did you actually think any of us actually believed the nonsense about no money? It was a job not a religion. Gene had a utopian vision it was my job to write to that vision.
