“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”― Edmund Burke

We are where we are — 76,740 dead from Covid-19 — because of the cowardice of putatively good men, brave men, intelligent men, patriotic men.

Where is Rex Tillerson who reputedly called Trump a “fucking moron”? You have anything to say?

Where is General Mattis who said Trump had the understanding of “a fifth- or sixth-grader,”, and ultimately resigned, but now refuses to speak out about what he has seen and heard? We’re listening… to the sound of silence.

Where is John Kelly, White House Chief of Staff who called Trump “an idiot”. You have anything you’d like to tell the class?

Where is Bolton who also resigned, but refused to testify during the impeachment trial? Those book sales more important than your country and the lives of its people? Guess they were.

Where is Mueller? In his case I add naïveté to my accusation of cowardice. He believed in our institutions without accepting or understanding that the institutions are only as good (or bad) as the men and women who staff them. And when Trump is staffing them you know it will be small, crabbed, evil men who are mirrors of Trump’s own proclivities.

Rod Rosenstein, what did they offer you that had you standing mumchance behind Bill Barr as he mischaracterized the Mueller Report? Do speak up, we can’t hear you.

In my fantasy world I imagine them preparing to go public in October with all the devastating information in a last ditch effort to stop Trump from winning a second term. But then I look back over the past three and a half years, and I allow that dream to vanish into mist and regret because there is nothing to indicate that they will find the courage to do what they must know would be right and honourable thing to do.

I grieve for the dead. I grieve for my country which is also dying. And I grieve for the planet which will not recover if we continue on this path.
