I’d use the “F” word except I don’t want to offend. What ought to offend people is what is happening in Louisiana. Apparently choice vouchers are being offered by the state, and people are using them to send their kids to religious schools where they are taught young Earth Creationism, bigotry and suspicion of mathematics.
You can read about it here, and even watch a video. I’ve been too frightened and depressed to run the video. The article is scary enough.
Oh, and the vouchers are already in use in several other states. I really want my doctor to have accepted and understood biology and evolution. Math is also good, but apparently there is now Christian math.
I remember when the fundies went nuts about Einstein and the theory of Relativity. I don’t understand my world any longer.
Well Einstein also got quite a bit of pushback and denial from various trained scientists who didn’t change their view of the universe until they had died. There is a reason that the pace of change in academia is considered by how long before a department changes hands.
I try to keep a view that articles like this are more likely to trigger my cognitive bias that I am worried that things are going to hell in a handbasket. Instead I have to realize that the number of people who are going to this are still quite small and not much different than the numbers who were going before or schools who taught that no matter what. I believe that the polls on how many doctors don’t believe in evolution in this country is still around 20-30% like it has been for 40 years. I doubt we can change it much better due to the fact that humans are basically irrational creatures whose prime irrationality is believing they are rational.
So these dimwits… faithful followers of the Dogma… I don
I adore all the Pratchett books, and Ventinari is one of my favorite characters. And Sir Terry was so wise to use him sparingly. It makes us always want more. 🙂
