Arrow

It a rather marathon session I finished watching the second season of ARROW last night.  I still really like the show, in particular Stephen Amell — Oliver Queen, Willa Holland — Thea Queen,  David Ramsey — John Diggle, and Emily Bett Rickards — Felicity.  I also have a soft spot for John Barrowman — he’ll always be Captain Jack from Dr. Who and Torchwood and he makes a fun villain in ARROW. I really, really wish they had a lawyer on their writing staff...

Must Have Been In the Ether — Connections between Interstellar & Big Hero 6

This post is filled with SPOILERS about two different films so you have been warned. *************************SPOILERS************************SPOILERS*************SPOILERS*******************SPOILERS*************** This past week I’ve seen two movies that, while vastly different in tone, delivered the same essential message — BIG HERO 6 and INTERSTELLAR.  I know people are going “seriously, Melinda?  An animated light hearted romp and a deeply serious space odyssey?  Yes, really because there...

Thoughts On Arrow

I finally set down with the XBox and Netflix and started streaming the first season of Arrow.  I finished season one last night after a number of nights of joyful binge watching.  I really like this show.  It’s got a great look, quite good scripts, a terrific cast and characters I’ve come to care about.  It also doesn’t hurt that Stephen Amell is gorgeous and he frequently takes his shirt off.  It’s nice to have some eye candy for the ladies.  We are so often forgotten...

The Amazing(ly Awful) Spiderman

I never thought I would write these words, but the Toby McGuire Spiderman 3 was a better movie than the current incarnation playing in the theaters now.  Not to say Spiderman 3 wasn’t an impressive shit sandwich, but The Amazing Spiderman with Andrew Garfield is so much worse and so horrible on so many levels. Why did I see it?  I was taking a young relative who has crush on Andrew Garfield, and who am I to cast stones with my mad crush on Tom Hiddelston?  There is also the fact that for me...

The Normal Heart

I recorded and watched the film version of Larry Kramer’s powerful play The Normal Heart last night on HBO.  Often times a play doesn’t translate all that well to film — long speeches that become agonizing when it’s not live, static staging, but this worked very well.  Even some of the long speeches worked because it’s people pouring out their fear and frustration.  There was even voice over which I didn’t hate.  I usually fine it intrusive as hell, but...

The Grand Budapest Hotel

I’ve been a bit agnostic about Wes Anderson.  I really loved the FANTASTIC MR. FOX, really disliked THE ROYAL TENEBAUMS.  MOONRISE KINGDOM left me a bit cold, but tonight I went and saw THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, and I loved it.  It has all of Anderson’s stylized quirks, but it works so well in this film.  The parade of terrific actors in tiny roles is a delight.  The humor is applied with the lightest touch, and at it’s core it’s a celebration of human decency.  I also...
