Turkish Adventure Part One

It all began on Tuesday March 31st.  I got to the airport way early for my flight.  I share my father’s habit of trying to go to the airport the day before the plane leaves so I won’t be late.  Anyway, there I am waiting for my flight to Chicago to make the connection to an international flight to Heathrow when American announces that the American Eagle plane has a flat tire and it has to be changed.  It will only be a delay of a thirty minutes or so.  No...

Off to Turkey

It’s about time to head to the barn to say goodbye to Vento, and then down to Albuquerque to catch my plane.I’ll be back with many trip reports on April 17th.Have fun.  I’m planning to.

Guilty Pleasure Two

My newest Guilty Pleasure now that Lipstick Jungle has been cancelled is NBC’s new series KINGS.   Hmm, Lipstick Jungle was also an NBC show.  I guess NBC has become the network of guilty pleasures. Because Ian McShane of Deadwood fame was staring in the show I decided to add it to the Tivo list.  I’ve now watched the two hour pilot, and one episode. It’s a weird mix of modern day conversations with the occasional almost 19th century sentence...

Turkish Adventure

I’m off to Turkey on Tuesday.  I’m debating about taking the laptop.  If I don’t take it along I’ll have to keep a hand written diary (how very early 20th century), and start a trip report when I get home.Or I take the laptop and blog from wifi spots.I’m soliciting advice on the question.

Friday Night Double Feature

Ian show me Office Space on Friday night.  What a great movie.  It was like a horrid flashback for anyone who has worked in carpeted cubicle hell.  It was also incredibly funny.  I especially loved Milton.  If you haven’t seen this movie, and decide to rent it pay close attention to Milton’s mumblings. We were jazzed from a day spent writing on our movie so we made it a double feature with a showing of Enchanted.  I had seen the film in the theater, and...

Getting “Mass” on a Problem

Tuesday evening I was doing thirty minutes on the bike at the club as a warm up for weight lifting.  I was irritated with myself because I started the third Edge book, and it just wasn’t working.  It felt like I was trotting people onto the stage, having them take a bow, and then moving on to the next re-introduction.Ian and I had also been working very hard on a new version of our movie based on his Milkweed Triptych.  I was trying to figure out why the script had so much...

Words to Live By

So I had a wonderful exchange with my veterinarian, and I just had to share.  Stuart is one of the those soft spoken western gentlemen who is always dressed in his cowboy hat, cowboy boots, jeans, work shirt and a vest.  I’ve had several people ask about breeding their mares to Vento, and I was amenable as long as we didn’t do natural cover.  I didn’t want to risk him getting kicked, and I thought if he mounted a dummy and we collected the semen it would keep...

Critter Advice

Hey, Gang,I’ve got a deck outside my bedroom, and some bunnies moved in underneath it.  Now they’re cute and all, and it’s fun to see those absurd ears emerging from beneath the deck followed by the whole bunny, but we have plaugue in New Mexico.  I bought flea spray to try and spray through the slats. But then yesterday I noticed a little ground squirrel had joined the party under the deck.  And then in the afternoon I watched a pack rat also join in the...

Galactica Ends

I watched the series finale of Battlestar Galactica last night.  I hung in on this series though it was starting to resemble a veeery slooow moootion train wreck.  And the people on the train were so busy chewing the scenery that it became embarrassing to watch them.  That was one set of characters.  Some of the others looked like they had been sedated.Let me start by saying that I missed several episodes this season, and here’s the damning statement — it...

Making Progress

I was reading Andrew Sullivan’s blog this morning, and came across an interesting article from Times on Line .It seems that non-believers are on the increase in America.  The article discusses how much of this was due to people’s reaction against the narrowness and ignorance of the Religious Right.  That’s exactly what happened to me.

March Madness – Book Version

Hi, All,I just learned that The Edge of Reason has been included in the March Madness Book Tournament.  According to my buddy, Sam Butler, it’s an honor to be included.  Apparently it’s also really good publicity if you manage to last a few rounds.  So, in the interest of pushing my book I’m providing the link here.  If you are so inclined, and think the book is worth it please feel free to go to BookspotCentral and vote for me.  I really would like...

Reminder

My good friend, Walter Jon Williams terrific new book, THIS IS NOT A GAME will be available at the end of this month.  Run, don’t walk to buy it.  It is really, really good.

Reading Recommendation

I just finished the second volume in Joe Abercrombie’s First Law Trilogy.  This is a stunning series, and I have to say I think this gentleman is one of the best fantasist working today.  This is a big trade paperback, and I read it in three days while still managing the rest of my life.  What I didn’t do was write on my own work because I was so swept up in this story, but that’s another matter.Anyway, Abercrombie pulls off an amazing feat.  In book one,...
