We’re Live!

So I now have this awesome new website with a cleaner, more updated design.  Many thanks to the team at Orphic Workshop.  I’m hoping this will be easier to navigate, I’ll write more posts, and more folks will stop by.  I’ll try to be as good about showing up here as I am on Facebook.  🙂  I have this feeling that what I post here should be important, or at least somewhat significant, but maybe that’s the wrong outlook.  Maybe this ought to just be a place where I break...

So Disgusted

Now Boner… excuse me Boehner and the Republicans are trying to deal with the deficit by gutting the Affordable Care Act.  That legislation will reduce health care costs, you morons.  I so don’t think throwing some 40 million people off health care is a financially sound move.   Let me put it in the business terms that these people seem to favor.  Basic health care will increase productivity.  If workers can seek medical care for routine prevention it will...

A Lonely Profession…Or Is It?

On Saturday I went out to dinner with some fellow writers, and their various spice, and as I drove home I was hit with an intense melancholy because the evening was over, and there was no-more-party. Most of the time I don’t notice that I’m alone because I have this crowd of whispering ghosts walking at my side.  Richard from the EDGE books, Tracy who will be the hero of IMPERIALS is demanding my attention, Linnet is still insecure, Shepard notices things and wants to...

This is the Bright New Star?

So, the Republicans are focusing on their next crop of “stars”  Marco Rubio seems to be leading the pack — “hey, look, America.  He’s brown!”  Of course his platform is identical to the old Republican platform so nothing has changed other then ethnicity, but the attitude seems to be “maybe nobody will actually listen to what we’re saying.” And of course Rubio is just as much of a coward about confronting the loonie Right as...

Skyfall

I loved SKYFALL.  There were a lot of reasons, but I’ll start with the top one — Daniel Craig.  I think he’s probably the best actor to ever play the role, and of course I have a mad crush on him because he is totally hot.  We also get to see Bond as fragile and uncertain, and that was such a lovely change from the Roger Moore smirk. I also loved the film because it didn’t objectify women in that horrible, icky way that was so common in the earlier...

The Appeal of a Diarist

I’ve been reading an enjoying the C.J. Cherryh FOREIGNER series, though I must say the last few books haven’t had a traditional structure of acts and a climax.  The story just sort of unspools, and then she stops when there’s enough for a book, and the next book picks up — sometimes moments after the last one ended. I had wondered about this style, and wasn’t sure it was entirely effective.  I’m enjoying them because I love the characters and the...

Long, Strange Road

Driving back to the condo after finishing my interview with William Shatner I had this moment of dislocation and disbelief.  I remembered being the little girl who first watched the Enterprise sail across my TV screen back in the nineteen sixties.  For the first time the pictures in my mind as I read Heinlein and Norton were tangible, something I could see.  I fell in love with Kirk and Spock and Bones. Flash forward to 2012 where I found myself seated across from the only true...

Baby Time

I’ve only attended two baby showers in my entire life.  In my circle of friends we are a curiously childless lot.  Only Steve Gould and Laura Mixon, and Daniel and Kat Abraham have children.  All the rest of us skipped that mile post in a life.  Most of us married, but few of us bred. Seeing the tiny shoes, and colorful socks, and a snuggy that will make the baby look like a tiny polar bear I could see the attraction of holding and guiding that tiny life....

Remarkable

This is an except from a letter that George Romney wrote to Barry Goldwater back in 1964 warning against the emerging “southern strategy” and other moves on the part of the GOP. This is just uncanny.  One wonders what the father would make of his truth challenged son? We need only look at the experience of some ideologically oriented parties in Europe to realize that chaos can result. Dogmatic ideological parties tend to splinter the political and social fabric of a nation,...

Looper

It’s taken me a long time to organize my thoughts about this film.  I sort of liked it.  I also found it dark and disturbing.  I thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s channeling of Bruce Willis facial expressions and physicality was amazing.  Over on Facebook I said I thought the movie gave me the ending it promised, but after some consideration I think it was maybe a little too subtle....

Bird Rescue

I’m worried about the bird I rescued out of my house this morning.  I got home from the barn to hear a frenzied cheeping.  The cats had the poor thing treed on a window sill, and it was clearly exhausted.  I think it got in yesterday when the locksmith left the front door open.  I finally got my hands around it, and carried it outside, but it managed to struggle and lose tail feathers.  It seemed to fly okay once I got it outside, but I’m worried the lack...

Getting Serious

There is a monster storm battering the east coast.  They are reading barometric pressures that have never been seen in recorded history.  This is what climate change looks like.  Because higher temperatures spawn killer tornadoes, and freak late October hurricanes.  Greenland is melting.  If the Gulf stream shuts down England will freeze.  Drought is destroying crops across much of the nation.  Can we have a conversation now? And here’s Mitt Romney on...

Making A List

I just paused to make a list of the ways in which Republicans split hairs over rape.  Let’s see there’s — 1.  Legitimate Rape (Todd Aiken) 2.  Forcible Rape (Paul Ryan) 3.  Emergency Rape (Linda McMahon) 4.  Gift From God Rape (Richard Mourdock) 5.  Some Women Rape Easy otherwise known as Women Are Just Lyin’ Bitches Rape (Roger Rivard) How about we just go with the President’s approach?  Rape is Rape. If you are a women why on...

Sometimes You Are Too Old

I discovered over the weekend that I spent at Mile Hi Con in Denver that there are some things that you really have to experience as a child.  If you wait the magic just doesn’t happen. Some things I’ve taken to like a duck-to-water.  Video gaming, Lady Gaga, Rhianna, Adele, Facebook.  Other things — not so much. The reason for this reflection happened at a barbecue over at Lou Berger’s house.  There was great barbecue with really kick-ass hot sauce....

So If You Really Want I.D.

I was watching a show about the efforts to suppress voting in this country, and it has my blood boiling.  So, I got to thinking, okay, how do we satisfy this push for voter I.D.?  Which, incidentally is a “solution in search of a problem”.  There is simply no measurable in-person voter fraud in this country.  Period.  You can find massive studies on this at The Brennan Center for Justice website. But okay, let’s say we decide we have to solve this...
