So, the Republicans are focusing on their next crop of “stars” Marco Rubio seems to be leading the pack — “hey, look, America. He’s brown!” Of course his platform is identical to the old Republican platform so nothing has changed other then ethnicity, but the attitude seems to be “maybe nobody will actually listen to what we’re saying.”
And of course Rubio is just as much of a coward about confronting the loonie Right as everyone else in the party. Here’s how he responded to a question about the age of the Earth.
Here’s my favorite part — “At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all.”
No, you can teach creation myths in a comparative religion course. You don’t get to teach them in a geology, biology, or physics class. There are facts and then there is fantasy.
I don’t know if Rubio actually believes all this Young Earth gibberish, but if he doesn’t he should have the courage to challenge the ignorant base.
You don’t get to use airplanes, modern medicine, and the internet and then turn around and say, “Science has an answer. Religion has an answer. It’s all a great mystery.” As if they have an equal chance of being right about the physical properties of our world. That’s being a stereotypical slimy politician, pandering to potential voters, and I’ve already had too many of them in my life. How about a tiny smidgeon of integrity? Please!
And until Republican politicians are willing to call out the crazies in their own party who celebrate ignorance and reject science I will be utterly opposed to the Republican party. There was a time when I would vote a split ticket. I cannot conceive of ever doing that again because the Right Wing is batshit crazy.
One of the fascinating things is what has defined “white” in America.. pretty much every time that definition has become a minority, it is quickly redefined to be larger… Scottish, Irish, Italians and Eastern Europeans were all “non-White” at one point or another.
My guess is that for people who this matters to will have Hispanics redefined as “White” as having “European heritage.” and everything will go back to having a definitive majority and definitive minority til the next round when the Chinese and Indians (well Asia and Europe are the same landmass) get added. At some point in the past we really should have quit caring about whether we had Stars on our bellies or not.. but I don’t think we are as smart as the Sneetches
I’m with you on rational gun control. I was taught to shoot at a young age by my brother, but when civilization (the subdivision) grew up around us all of us had to be very selective in which way we aimed the rifles and guns. Our high school at the time had a sharp shooting team. That school is now an office bldg, and there’s isn’t a high school that I heard of recently that has a sharp shooting team. I enjoyed sharp shooting, but when my Granduncle Doug tried to teach me to handle the more powerful shot gun the recoil knocked me down and bruised my shoulder. So, I got the message and I give up guns and moved on to a less invasive sport. I’ll stand up for a rational program of gun “control.” We need someway to control the misuse of guns. You are right, we don’t need an assault rifle to hunt deer or to perfect our skills at hitting a target at a gun range. Frankly, I had just as much fun in archery and it wasn’t loud at all; just a little – my word ‘whirrrshoooh. ‘ Before closing, I don’t know who illustrates your book covers, but they are great.
