My newest Guilty Pleasure now that Lipstick Jungle has been cancelled is NBC’s new series KINGS. Hmm, Lipstick Jungle was also an NBC show. I guess NBC has become the network of guilty pleasures.
Because Ian McShane of Deadwood fame was staring in the show I decided to add it to the Tivo list. I’ve now watched the two hour pilot, and one episode.
It’s a weird mix of modern day conversations with the occasional almost 19th century sentence construction. They are doing the whole King David thing. Our young hero is named David, the king is Silas, and at times it’s incredibly heavy handed. But the production values are very fine, and I’d watch McShane read the phone book.
I just checked Imdb, and viewership was down 65%. Looks like my latest guilty pleasure is about to go into a ditch. It is an incredibly ambitious and unusual show. Which of course means it’s doomed to die.
