Went and saw Green Lantern Sunday night, and I quite enjoyed it.  I went in with very low expectations which probably helped, and it’s certainly not a masterpiece, but it was a satisfying summer movie.  Of the three superhero flicks I rank them as follows — X-Men: First Class as the best, then Green Lantern, and I have to put Thor at the bottom of the list.  Thor looked great, and the two eye candy boys were great, but the story was a muddled mess.

Green Lantern on the other hand had a coherent, if predictable story, well told, and they didn’t insult my intelligence by having the love interest not recognize her childhood friend because he was wearing a mask.

At one point near the end of the movie I said aloud “Throw the ring in Mount Doom”, and sure enough the final tag scene proved me right.  So the script went right where I expected.  There were no surprises, but I didn’t get bored and I didn’t get impatient.

The leading man was appealing, the girl didn’t just scream and need to be rescued which was a refreshing change.  They made a nod toward science, and our hero being smart rather than just a bad ass which I also liked.

I wished the villain hadn’t been such a schlub and unattractive geek.  Both he and Hal had Daddy Issues, and it would have been more interesting if they’d been more equals rather than the other guy being such a loser.  Tim Robbins was having fun mugging it up as the Senator.

All in all a pleasant way to spend two hours.
